Olympic Stadium and surroundings

This is where the 2004 Olympic Games were held. Olympic Stadium was built in 1982 to host the European Athletics Championship and has hosted noumerous sport events since, including the IAAF World Championship in 1997. Extensive reconstruction took place prior the 2004 Games. The venue will host the Champions League final in May 2007.

Titanic, the artifact exhibition

Last fall, the exhibition of the artifacts of the infamous ship TITANIC was on display in Athens. This mug is one of the thousands of objects salvaged from the wreck.
A large piece of ice was there for everyone to touch, just to get the idea of how cold it was that night and how it felt when everyone jumped in the cold sea.A bathroom knob, still inside the marble that decorated the room
A, then modern, compass rust and crushed after seven decades in the bottom of the ocean.

The exhibition is no longer displayed in Athens.
Check the international site to see if it's somewhere near you.

Attalos Arcade @ ancient agora

(Photo and caption by one of my best friends, Apostolos "Captain Jumbo" Chatzidimou. Visit his blog)
The Attalos Arcade on a sunny athenean noon. Here used to be the heart of the ancient agora. The place where Socrates and fans used to gather and talk philosophy. Nowdays, harmony is hosting guests on their way off Acropolis just before they hit a cold coffee break at the nearby modern cafe.

Zappeion gardens

The Zappeion garden grounds and the fountain as seen from the building entrance, between the columns. (See previous post's photo)
This is the gathering place of several Athenians who want to discuss politics with each other, the "Small Parliament" as they themselves call it. Most of the trees you see here are over a hundrend years old and were planted during the construction of the site in 1896. Posted by Picasa

Zappeion

This magnificent building was erected in 1896 in order to become the Olympic Village of the first Modern Olympic Games. From then on, it serves as a conference and exhibitions hall. The latest large excibition which took place there was the "Titanic" with artifacts and photos from the infamous ship.
