Panathinaiko Stadium

This is where the Olympic Games of 1896 were held.

The stadium was first built in ancient times and was remade in marble in 329 BC. By 140 AD was mostly as you see it today, with capacity over 50.000 people.

Unfortunately, wars, uncivilized conquerors, raging enemies and (eventually) time almost completely destroyed it. It was remade once more in modern times to host the 1896 Olympics.
In the 2004 Olympic Games, the Panathinaiko Stadium hosted the archery competition, and served as the finish site for the men's and women's Marathon races.

I'm surprised to learn that Panathinaikos do not play there, you have to say that it has a very old look about it again.

Well, the stadium is about 2,237 years older than the football team. :-)

Panathenians was an ancient festival in honor of goddess Athena. This stadium was a central venue for that.

The Stadium was named after Panathenians which took the name from Athena. The team was name after the city of Athens.

Cool photos and information. Looks like you had the place to yourself...can anyone just walk in and check it out?

Sarah,
usually, it's not open to the public. One has to stand outside but the fence is actually very low. You can take photos as if there wasn't any.
