Facing Athens

The building on the right is the town hall of Andros, built around 1920's. The building on left is National Telecommunications office, built in the 70's. Obviously, the architectural "taste" has declined over the decades to a very bad one.

The antennae over the white building are facing Athens. When you are in a greek island, you can always tell where Athens is just by looking at the cranes over OTE buildings.

good comments for the last two days but kind of out of season... I expected you to show the streets of Athens and faces of athenians celebrating the 2nd place in the world basketball campionship

Kalliopi, if I showed such pics this wouldn´t be a city blog but a news blog. Photos of Athenians celebrating can be found in every news webpage. I am here to show the "hidden" side of the city, not the obvious one.

Well, I've seen worse, but for Greek architecture, I agree that this is a most notable decline.

Tell me, while we are on the subject of telecoms, what is coverage like on the islands for broadband?

(Sorry about the basketball result.)

Pamela, almost every big island has DSL infastracture. Not the small ones though.

As for the basketball game, that's life. Congrats to the winners. Our players arrive at Athens tonight around midnight. They will receive a heroes' welcome. After all, it was a big success. It's just that Spain's was bigger. :-)

Thanks for the replies Ovelikios.

Silly question, how big (do you guess) is big enough for DSL? Or, more precisely, do you know where I might find the information on Kos?

Well, I had to say something: I can't come here, whilst I'm in Spain, asking daft questions and seem impolite about the basketball, can I? :) And you are right, just getting to the final, at that level, is indeed an achievement worthy of celebration.

See you there. Greetings to beautiful Spain (I spent my honeymoon last year in Barcelona and Andalucia. Perfect!)
